Charles Clarke :
Charles Clarke, the Home Secretary, yesterday urged European
politicians to put the fight against terrorism above concerns for civil
liberties, declaring that the right not to be blown up was the greatest
human right of all.
…
Mr Clarke was in combative mood before addressing the European
Parliament’s civil liberties committee. He said MEPs needed to accept
that it was "a fundamental civil liberty of people in Europe to be able
to go to work on their transport system in the morning without being
blown up".
Umm, no. Sorry, doesn’t pass the smell test. Putting the "fight against terrorism" above civil liberties is no different from putting "building communism" or "the safety of the Volk" above civil liberties.
This is quite apart from the fact that we could abandon all civil liberties altogether and there would still be acts of violence which killed people.
