Lori Drew is undoubtedly a most unpleasant woman:if she were a man I would be recommending a horse whipping. For what Lori Drew did was drive an already depressed teenager to suicide:
named Josh Evans who hated her. He was 16, owned a pet snake, and she thought he was the cutest boyfriend she ever had.
Josh
contacted Megan through her page on MySpace.com, the social networking
Web site, said Megan’s mother, Tina Meier. They flirted for weeks, but
only online — Josh said his family had no phone. On Oct. 15, 2006, Josh
suddenly turned mean. He called Megan names, and later they traded
insults for an hour.
The next day, in his final message, said Megan’s father, Ron Meier, Josh wrote, "The world would be a better place without you."
Sobbing, Megan ran into her bedroom closet. Her mother found her there, hanging from a belt. She was 13.
Six
weeks after Megan’s death, her parents learned that Josh Evans never
existed. He was an online character created by Lori Drew, then 47, who
lived four houses down the street in this rapidly growing community 35
miles northwest of St. Louis.
The thing is, driving someone else to suicide is not actually a crime. Thus no charges have ben laid against Lori Drew:
Jack Banas, the St. Charles County prosecutor who announced that no charges would be filed over the Megan Meier Internet hoax, answered some questions yesterday about why no charges would be forthcoming.
But he did not put an end to all the questions in the public’s mind. And he was not the only one who commented on the story yesterday.
A blogger claiming to be Lori Drew posted "I’m Lori Drew" yesterday and engaged, for several hours in a running argument with readers who commented.
Whether it was really Lori Drew or not, it was one of the only places that was arguing another side to the Megan Meier story–albeit, not very effectively.
After looking over press accounts of the report yesterday by the prosecutor, we picked out what might be some items for the defense of Lori Drew in the public’s mind.
So, no criminal charges for Lori Drew, just the condemnation of all right thinking people.
