Mary Delgado might have a problem or two in completing the long planned marriage to her partner Byron Velvik. The former cheeleader was chosen by the bass fisherman in the second season of "The Bachelor" and they’ve been engaged ever since. Apparently on Wednesday Delgado punched Velvik in the mouth. One does have to wonder why? Is there a slight absence of committment on either side? Three years of living together without getting married isn’t all that unusual these days but perhaps one or other of them wanted to take it to the next stage and the other didn’t?
A former cheerleader for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who was proposed
to on the reality TV show "The Bachelor" was accused of punching a man
she lives with in the mouth, authorities said.
Mary Delgado was
taken into custody just after midnight Wednesday on a battery charge
and was under the influence of alcohol when she was arrested, according
to a police affidavit.
Delgado received a proposal on the show in
2004 from professional bass fisherman Byron Velvick. The two appeared
together Tuesday in a special episode of "The Bachelor" called "After
the Final Rose."
The police affidavit does not name Delgado’s
fiance, but says the pair have lived together "as a family" for the
last three years. According to sheriff officials, Delgado was released
Wednesday afternoon.
The actual charges are domestic battery (see! it’s not only men beating women!) and, as is coyly noted, "alcohol was reportedly a factor".
On the same night that the ABC reality dating show’s After the Final Rose broadcast was trotting them out as a "success story" counterpoint to eleventh-season The Bachelor star Brad Womack‘s
decision to reject both of his final suitors, Mary Delgado was arrested
for assaulting Byron Velvick, the fiance that proposed to her at the
end of The Bachelor’s sixth season.
Delgado was arrested early Wednesday morning by Pinellas County police
and charged with domestic battery, Tampa Bay’s WFTS-TV ABC affiliate reported
Friday. She was booked into the Pinellas County Jail around 12:30AM
Wednesday morning and was released on her own recognizance later that
afternoon, WFTS reported.
According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office arrest affidavit,
Delgado hit Velvick in the face, causing a cut on his upper lip. The
40-year-old Tampa resident subsequently admitted to striking Velvick,
WFTS reported. The charges of domestic battery against Delgado are a
misdemeanor, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office subject
charge report. Alcohol was reportedly a factor.
Delgado and Velvick met during filming for The Bachelor’s
Fall 2005 sixth-season, which ended with Velvick proposing marriage to
Delgado. While the couple has yet to wed and delayed their wedding
plans several times, they’ve remained engaged over the last three years
as Velvick moved from Nevada to Tampa.
What’s most amusing is that hours before the incident they had been used as an example of a "scuccess story" on the current season of "The Bachelor" after this year’s male contestant rejected both of the female finalists.
The
morning after Mary Delgado and Byron Velvick were labeled a success
couple on Brad Womack’s ‘The Bachelor: After the Final Rose,’ Delgado
was arrested for assaulting Velvick.
Velvick
and Delgado appeared on ‘The Bachelor’ as an example of success after
Brad Womack rejected both of his final women. The couple said they
planned to get married in November and claimed they were very happy.
Apparently
something went very wrong the next morning as Delgado was arrested and
charged with domestic battery at 12:30 am at Pinellas County Jail. She
was released later that afternoon. The 40-year-old hit her fiancé’s
face, cutting his upper lip.
Guess that after show party simply contained a little too much free booze, eh?
Here’s a wire report on it
