237 Reasons to Have Sex

Odd:

Psychologists at the University of Texas have identified 237 reasons
why men and women have sex. While love and attraction remain the
clincher for many, for others it is about getting closer to God;
gaining a promotion; revenge; or a way to get rid of a tension
headache, The Independent on Sunday reports. Some of the 2,000 men and
women, aged 17 to 52, who were asked said sex was a reasonably
effective way of overcoming boredom or burning up calories, while a few
were attracted by the idea that it kept them warm, helped them fall
asleep or eased the stress of the day.

"Overcoming boredom"?

And no one bothered to mention that it is (or at least can be) fun?

  1. What this the (truly amazing) conclusion of a sponsored research project by a team or a PhD thesis?

  2. I like to think holistically. Hence, motives can often be an amalgamation of the above. However, I’d like to suggest reason 238 – to give academics something to do other than pointless, and obvious, research.
But in the end, we have sex because we can. We’re hardwired that way – without it we wouldn’t be here.

“Have fun”: not a permitted thought. cf all the talk about people over-eating because they seek comfort – it’s not allowed to say that you eat because you enjoy the flavours and textures.

  4. “Have fun”: not a permitted thought.
Not permitted by whom, exactly? Who was restricting the respondents or the reporters? Oh that’s right: nobody.
In fact, maybe, just maybe, one paragraph in the Globe and Mail did not entirely encompass the findings. Maybe some respondents did actually say they did it because “It feels good”.
But don’t let that spoil the standard issue “nanny state” rambling.
