OTOH this is what Wakefield Council has also learned from experience:
“Para 2.3 In the year 2003 Wakefield MDC had 71 separate incidents of unauthorised camping, 68% of these were on Local Authority owned land. On every occasion when Travellers moved onto council owned land Wakefield MDC offerred them alternate accommodation on the permanent travellers site. On every occasion this offer was made, it was declined.”

  2. Bob,
    And?
How is the first statement incompatible with the second?

  3. There’s scant mention of the cause of chavdom (i.e. progressive socialist policies). The author also refers to the 46 year old Simon Heffer as venerable. I suppose that puts me in the category of ‘late middle-aged’.

  4. “How is the first statement incompatible with the second?”
By reports, Wakefield MDC has evidently found it necessary to have frequent recourse to the law to evict travellers who have settled without authorisation on council owned sites despite being offered alternative settlement sites. Naturally, this amounts to systematic victimisation – I’m supposed to believe.

    Who’s telling you that?

  6. There’s a powerful traveller’s lobby which sometimes comes up in BBCR4 interviews to claim lack of provision of approved sites for encampments. But it’s worth reading the Wakefield MDC evidence on the experience they have had coping with unauthorised encampments despite provision to accommodate travellers.
