For Stephen Pollard

Via Matt T, an interesting quote from David Blunkett’s diaries.

"For the rest of my life, I will regret speaking to Stephen Pollard."

Bit harsh don’t you think? I can imagine regretting spilling the beans to him but what’s wrong with a cheery ‘Eh up Stevie lad, ‘ow’s thy diet then?’  (which would get your the answer ‘Fine and it’s Stephen’.)

Surely that’s not something you’ll regret for the rest of your life?

I think I understand where Mr Blunkett is coming from.
“It’s rather unsettling being called a liar by a Cabinet minister. Especially when you are his biographer. In Lord Stevens’s memoirs, the former Metropolitan Police Commissioner suggests that David Blunkett is a lying, backstabbing bully. Having read Lord Stevens?s account of his relationship with the former Home Secretary, it is clear that, whatever else he may be, Mr Blunkett is indeed a liar.”

“Britain’s former top police chief has branded cabinet minister David Blunkett a ‘lying, backstabbing bully’. The retired Scotland Yard Commissioner launched his attack in his memoirs, which are being serialised in the News of The World.”

I’m open to correction, as always, but can’t recall a previous occasion in the post-war period where a recently retired Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police has described the Home Secretary he served as a “lying, backstabbing, bully”.
