Managerial Competence

It’s vitally important that we have detailed government, that nothing should be left unregulated, for it is all being done for our own good, is it not? Those whose major talents are kissing babies and lying to the voters must indeed legislate each and every nook and cranny of life. For think of what would happen without it, we might be free and live in liberty!

Quite.

His colleague, pensions partner Giles Orton, said: "Through years of
legislative incompetence, pension schemes are astoundingly complicated.
The DTI has tried to put age discrimination on top of it and made a
right dog’s dinner of it."

As, in a democracy, those voted into power are never actually going to be the competent, in such a democracy we therefore need the lightest of regulatory touches.
