Idiots

Apologies to the many fine people, both male and female, who serve as magistrates but this decision being urged upon the government is idiotic:

Magistrates in youth courts, who are concerned that young people are
increasingly hooked on cannabis and turning to crime to fund their
habits, are trying to pressure the Government to re-instate it as a
Class B drug for juveniles.

Raising a drug from Class C to B will, inter alia, make it more expensive as the risks of dealing in it will rise. Thus, those "hooked" will be paying more for their hit, thus committing more criminal acts to fund it.

There may or may not be good reasons to make cannabis Class B (my own opinion is, as is well known, that it, alongside heroin, cocaine and all the rest should be freely upon sale at Boots)  but this particular justification is simply stupid, perverse.

  1. I was recently a juror on a ridiculous case involving a young man who funded his cannabis usage by selling on to his friends. One of the details to emerge during the case was that even though cannabis had been downgraded from B to C, no change had been made in the sentencing guidelines. As far as I can see, this means the downgrading is effectively meaningless – as would be any new upgrading.
Unfortunately, we had to find the young man guilty (as he was), despite the widespread view in the jury room being that no good was being served by the verdict.
