Continuing concerns about the progress of modernisation in the NHS have diverted attention from a truly remarkable increase in teacher productivity in primary education which has largely passed unremarked. According to very recent press reports, a detailed breakdown of class sizes in primary schools to be published shortly is expect to show that as many as 29,000 classes now have more than 30 pupils, an increase of some 5,000 classes since last year.
