Charles Moore

Weird, just plain weird:

Mr Blair pointed out that roughly three quarters of the public
supported his 90-day detention plan. This does not prove, of course,
that the public was right, but shouldn’t it give MPs pause?

MPs are representatives, not delegates. How odd for a Tory like Charles Moore to forget that.

Like the paper, Charles Moore seems to have lost the plot. The paper is rapidly going downhill, apparently aiming to “modernise and become relevant?”. Was it not Goering who said something about pulling out his gun when someone mentioned culture? The same idea now goes for “modernisation and relevance” as touted by the Bliars etc.
Tim adds: I’ve been told that the actual Goering quote is “When someone mentions culture I reach for my Browning” which is actually a rather good pun.

  2. It is odd just how many Tories have swallowed the line about the Police demanding something being a necessary and sufficient condition for granting it. You can imagine the same people in uproar if the Teacher’s unions, or the RCN, or the BMA, made some ludicrous demands and the government attempted to railroad them through parliament by pointing to a press release from the union spokesman. A disturbing form of power and uniform worship, I think.
Of course, the threat we currently face is ‘unique’. Unique in that the public is terrified, despite the probability of being caught in a terrorist attack being miniscule, and for most people outside London so close to zero as to be practically non-existent.

  3. Odd

It is indeed odd how many Tories have gone for the line that we can’t turn down anything the police ask for. Here’s Matthew D’Ancona from Wednesday’s Torygraph…

  4. Doing anything that lowers the liberties of the people for the convenience of Beurocrats should light everyones “be suspicious” warning lights.

  5. The fact that Charles Moore can write pages in defence of his right to hunt, yet cares nothing about habeus corpus, speaks volumes.
He also wrote some drivel about not liking cricket, if any more evidence were needed that he is a prize buffoon.
