The Groan Strikes Again.

So we shouldn’t be aiming for those useless consumer baubles you see, no, rather, we should be experiencing the glories of the world around us….

Which would make you
happier, owning a Ferrari or taking time out to walk the Machu Picchu
trail in southern Peru? According to an intriguing piece of research
published last week by the bank Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein, you’d
be better off taking the walk. The elusive route to contentment,
according to the City analyst who wrote the report, lies not in
material possessions but in experiences such as scuba diving and exotic
holidays.

Well, aye, that’s the route I’ve personally taken. Lots of living in odd places, doing interesting things rather than storing up the physical baubles. But I’m still not sure about the actual comparison made there:

Tour Highlights

  • Lima’s Colonial district
  • ‘White City’ of Arequipa
  • Condors of Colca Canyon
  • Sillustani burial towers
  • Meet the tribes of Lake Titicaca
  • Train journey across the Andes
  • Inca and colonial architecture of Cuzco
  • The Sacred Valley of the Incas and Ollantytambo fortress
  • Sunrise at Machu Picchu

Having actually done the Peru thing, anyone know where I can get a Ferrari for under two grand?  Can I even insure one for under two grand?

I think if you get one over 25 years old, it’s treated as ‘classic’ and the insurance is lower.

  2. well surely that’s the point; you will get much more pleasure out of the holiday and it’s cheaper; therefore the holiday is better value.

  3. That’s why we should tax air-travel so it’s only affordable by the rich, and so these tourist spots don’t get spoilt by riff-raff.

Now, what kind of South American itinerary is that?
    I ask you.

Now THAT seems a bit more like an Itinerary.

  5. I also think that people don’t look so much on the material side of life.If I was to chose between a Ferrari or a scuba diving holiday I would chose the second because on the holiday I would be able to spend some quality time with my family and meet with new people.
