As you may or may not know, February is Lesbian, Gay, Transgender and Bisexual History Month in British schools. Nick Cohen doesn’t think it’s a very good idea, and as always with his writing, there are phrases to relish:
If you knew a little
history, I suspect you would be as unimpressed by the campaign’s
decision to present Florence Nightingale as a lesbian and suggest that
William Shakespeare was bisexual. It’s true that Nightingale never
married and wore sensible shoes in the Crimea. That’s enough proof that
she was a lesbian for some, but most historians need a bit more
evidence.
So, as my contribution to this extravaganza of real history, ’istory fer real peepul, a painting from the archives:

Lord Cornbury, a former Governor of New York and New Jersey. Well, maybe.
I am aware that transvetism is not the same as transgender, gay, lesbian or bisexual, but the story is so much more fun than the one about a latter day Governor of New Jersey, is it not?
