Commercial Sponsorship for the Military?

Maureen Dowd writes, in what I am sure she thinks is a hilariously satirical manner, that perhaps the US military could be better supported by commercial sponsorship than the bureaucracy of the Pentagon and tax money.

The sponsors could help a lot in keeping the Army in top shape. After
all, our troops could be stuck there for years, perhaps decades. And
could even wind up defending an Iraqi ayatollah.

Well, yes, she might actually be right, perhaps it would be a good idea for those who wish to support the troops to volunteer a little more of their money. If only there was in fact a way to do this, a way in which individuals and corporations could add their mites to the golden torrents of Pentagon cash. For as is noted on the same page today:

One of the few positions that enjoy near uniform agreement across the
political spectrum is the importance of supporting the troops who put
their lives on the line for our country.

Fortunately there is a way to do this. There are many fine organisations supporting the efforts of reconstruction in Iraq and Afghanistan but our Maureen is seeking something more direct, a method of actually contributing to the military firepower, not the hearts and minds campaign.
Ms. Dowd, may I introduce Mr. du Toit? An immigrant to your fair country he knows all about you and your views and, sad to say, does not completely approve of them. However, given that old phrase, "pecunia non olet", I am sure that your money would be welcome in his small scale fund to do just what you suggest, support the troops at the front line. For he runs, and has for some time, an effort called the "Walter and Adam Fund", sometimes also known as "Adopt a Sniper". Here, individual contributions are gathered together and used to purchase the items that said front-line troops find that  the Pentagon has not supplied them with. I have no doubt that Kim (his first name, something that you as an unmarried woman might find a little too informal to use at first) would be willing to explain all of this further if you were to contact him.
It would not be right for me to insist that you should indeed donate, or even to mention sums that might be suitable, as I am unaware of your income level. I can only provide you with some guidance as to proportions, not absolute sums. Shall we say one third of your regular columnar fee? Perhaps that one third you have retained after the payment to your brother for one of your better recent efforts?
I am sending this via email to Ms. Dowd and will, of course, post any response. Not holding my breath.

  1. Taking a leaf from the local PBS affiliate’s fund raising procedure —
I hereby promise to match any funds Ms Dowd provides to the “Adopt a Sniper” project, and challenge other lurkers of the blogosphere to do likewise.
