Susan Boyle is of course the rather wonderfully odd Scottish singer who created a sensation when she was on Britain’s Got Talent in recent weeks. Susan Boyle is a live alone spinster (except for her cat Pebbles) and claims, quite plausibly, to be a virgin in her middle age. She’s also got a pretty useful voice: Susan Boyle’s voice isn’t really quite as good as some seem to think, she’d struggle to make it as a professional singer if she were trying to do so in the more normal manner.
However, her appearance on the show has meant that instead of a series of audtions, up against many other well trained singers, she’s been able to leap frog all of that and appeal directly to the audience over the heads of the gatekeepers.
Susan Boyle’s leap to fame has certainly been bolstered by the press as well:
Susan Boyle returned to the stage last night after keeping her fans waiting to
learn whether she would perform on the opening night of the Britain’s Got
Talent live tour.
The Scottish singer performed at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham less
than two weeks after she was admitted to the Priory clinic. She came second
to the dance group Diversity in the final of the ITV show.
Tour organisers were determined not to put any pressure on Boyle to perform in
case she suffered a repeat of the emotional breakdown that led to her
admission to the North London hospital. Her fans were left waiting until the
last moment as Boyle waited to acclimatise herself to the arena until she
was comfortable enough to perform. Her representatives now hope that she
will perform on the remaining 19 dates of the tour.
Not that there’s anything wrong with the press reporting a sudden leap to fame like Susan Boyle’s of course:
Miss Boyle got off to a faltering start, appearing to be slightly
out of time during the first verse of Memory from Cats – the song she
performed in the Britain’s Got Talent semi-final.
But she soon
seemed to get into her comfort zone, lapping up the crowd’s cheers and
looking a different person to the fragile individual who entered the
Priory.
Wearing the same floor-length glittering dress she
sported in the show’s final, Miss Boyle reached her arms out to the
audience and blew kisses during her performances of Memory and I
Dreamed A Dream.
Famously, as a result of the competition itself, Susan Boyle checked into The Priory with “nervous exhaustion“.
The Scottish singer reportedly wowed fans with renditions of Les Miserables number ‘I Dreamed A Dream’ and ‘Memory’ from Cats on the first night of the Britain’s Got Talent live tour in Birmingham.
Boyle’s involvement in the project was thrown into doubt after she checked in to the Priory with exhaustion earlier this month.
However, it was later suggested that Boyle would go ahead with the live gigs after Simon Cowell boosted the star’s confidence by predicting a bright future for her.
Although that bright future might not go on all that long really.
Susan Boyle will perform in the second Britain’s Got Talent live tour concert on Saturday after singing at the opening show.
For while she’ll perform in this tour, and there’ll no doubt be a Susan Boyle album out seen, it’s simply a sad fact that her voice just isn’t all that good, not by professional standards. Great by amateur ones, but not professional. Still, there’s an awful lot of people who are able to cash in on Susan Boyle (Susan Boyle included) while the bandwaggon does roll:
