Facebook worm

Yes, there's a Facebook worm out there. Did anyone think that a site as popular as Facebook would not become a target for the worm, trojan and virus writers? The thing I'm having a little trouble with though is what is the value of a Facebook worm? No one uses their credit card or the like on hte site, so what's the point? What can you make from it?

Yes, I know the facebook worm Koobface
is outside my normal salacious faire, but I felt the need to write
about it (you’ll see why below). Basically it works by sending you a
fake facebook/ myspace/ whatever email that appears to be from one of
your friends – a link to a fake youtube video.

The
facebook worm then works by telling you that you need to upgrade your
adobe flash player (or whatever it’s called). But what you click on is
not indeed an upgrade, but a virus that hijacks your computer. And not
in the “fun” sense of the word “hijacks”.

Ahhhh, OK, that makes sense. The Facebook worm isn't so much about Facebook, it's about creating a zombie computer. That does have value.

A new strain of Koobface worm, a type of web application virus, is
resurfacing in Facebook and Myspace. Security experts warn the users of
the popular online social networks to be watchful and use caution when
on the networks. The "Koobface" Facebook worm tricks users and hijacks
accounts.

The value of a zombie computer is that it can be used to send out lots more spam, to possibly infect other computers. As well, of course, of getting your passwords and so on from your own.

There are many more stories about this, here's a selection of them:
