Russell Brand injected his own style of humor into the VMA’s yesterday and upset some people in the process. Brand who is know in the UK for his blunt talking and honesty regarding previous drug and sex addictions seemed out of place in the young, Christian, non political world of the VMA’s.
Brand’s quips regarding George Bush and purity rings did not illicite the intended hilarity, just upset and angry retorts. In response to the remarks about the Jonas brothers purity rings, Jordin Sparks said, "I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It’s not bad to wear a promise ring, because not everybody – guy or girl – wants to be a slut."
Brand came back on stage and started to apologize but turned it into a joke saying, "I didn’t mean to take it lightly. I don’t want to piss off teenage fans. Promise rings, I’m well up for it. [But] a bit of sex, it never hurt anybody."
Russell Brand is a funny guy but his humor may take a little getting used to by earnest young Americans. Let’s hope this gig has not burnt too many boats in the USA.
