Christine Beatty has been caught out lying on oath about her affiar with her boss, Kwame Kilpatrick. Christine Beatty and said boss, the mayor, were asked on oath last summer whether they had in fact had a sexual relationship and both said, as I say, on oath, that they had not. That turns out not actually to be true.
of staff lied about their relationship last summer at a police
whistle-blower trial that has cost the cash-strapped city more than $9
million, according to records obtained by the Free Press.
The false testimony potentially exposes them to felony perjury charges, legal experts say.
Kilpatrick and chief of staff Christine Beatty
denied during testimony in August that they had a sexual relationship.
But the records, a series of text messages, show them engaged in
romantic banter as well as planning and recounting sexual liaisons.
The messages are also at odds with the pair’s
trial testimony that they did not fire Deputy Police Chief Gary Brown
in 2003, an ouster that led him to sue. The text messages show Beatty
recalling the "decision that we made to fire Gary Brown."
Yup, they were indeed making the beast with two backs. And quite sensibly, Christine Beatty and Kwmae Kilpatrick are likely to be asked to resign their jobs. No, it’s not the sex, it’s the lying.
Political consultants began trying to read the fallout on the city’s
political establishment now that text messages contradict what Mayor
Kwame Kilpatrick and his chief of staff, Christine Beatty, said under
oath about a romantic, sexual relationship between them.
"I
think Detroiters have reached their tipping point," said Sam Riddle, a
longtime political consultant. "This is going to change the political
landscape in the city."
Kilpatrick, who is up for re-election
for his third term next year, may have a difficult time if he tries to
run again, Riddle said. City residents are "very upset" at the millions
of tax dollars that were used to pay settlements and legal costs that
stemmed, in part, to the mayor’s illicit affair, Riddle said.
There’s yet more, of course:
Obviously this story is on fire. Members of the community are
calling into radio shows, posting comments online about the steamy text
messages Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his Chief of Staff Christine Beatty
exchanged during 2002-2003.
One of the reasons people are so vocal and emotional about the
exchanges is that during last year’s Whistleblower trial in which two
former Detroit Police officers alleged they were fired because they did
not play along with the Mayor and his deceptions, Mayor Kilpatrick and
Ms. Beatty were both asked under oath if they had had a sexual affair.
Both denied it under oath, so therefore perjury is now an issue along
with the infidelity.
The Wayne County Prosecutor has not responded to any of these
charges. The judge over that trial, Michael Callahan has said these
text messages has no bearing on the case because the defendants won the
lawsuit. The defendants won a combined $6.5 million in 2007.
Perhaps as well as perjury there might be a charge of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice?
s spokeswoman, Maria Miller, declined comment Wednesday.Using text messages Kilpatrick and his chief of staff Christine Beatty
exchanged, the Free Press revealed that they lied on the witness stand
when they denied having had an affair.
Kilpatrick and Beatty
also testified that they did not fire Brown. But the Free Press later
found a text message in which they discussed “the decision that we made
to fire Gary Brown.”
Kilpatrick settled that case and another
whistle-blower case in October for $8.4 million. His legal bills
brought the total cost for the cash-strapped city to $9 million.
The false testimony potentially exposes Kilpatrick and Beatty to felony perjury charges, legal experts said.
But only a prosecutor can decide whether to bring charges. Worthy’
“It
will be interesting to see how she handles it,” Riddle said. “I do
believe Kym Worthy has the integrity and strength to address the issue
at hand.”
