A gunman has opened fire at a crowded shopping centre, killing eight and wounding five before turning the weapon on himself.
Witnesses at the Westroads Mall in Omaha, Nebraska,
reported hearing up to 40 shots as the man began firing a rifle,
apparently at random, from a third-floor balcony yesterday.
Nine
people including the gunman – named locally as Robert Hawkins, aged 19
or 20 – were said to have died at the scene. At least five others were
taken to hospital. Two were described as in a critical condition last
night.
The gunman left a suicide note that was
found at his home by his mother, a law enforcement official was
reporting as saying. Local television reported that the note said he
wanted to "go out in style".

The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Robert A. Hawkins,
probably acted alone in yesterday’s shooting spree that injured
five other people, according to Omaha officials. The shootings,
which occurred three weeks before Christmas, took place inside
Von Maur Inc., a privately owned department store that sells
apparel, shoes and related goods.
“The shots wouldn’t stop,” Carol Padon told the Omaha
World-Herald. “I was so busy praying that it’s really hard to
tell the details.”
Customers and employees fled or hid among clothing racks
and in bathrooms as the gunman roamed the children’s apparel
area, customer service and gift-wrapping. The gunman later was
found dead on the third floor, where he had taken aim at
shoppers from a balcony, police said. His victims were found on
the second and third floors.
It was the second mass shooting at a U.S. mall this year.
In February, Sulejmen Talovic, 18, killed five people and
wounded four at the Trolley Square Mall in Salt Lake City before
being fatally shot by police.

Hawkins took an SKS assault rifle to a busy department store in Omaha,
Nebraska and opened fire, killing eight terrified Christmas shoppers,
and wounding five others before killing himself.
Hundreds of
people who had been in the store at the Westroads Mall hid in
changerooms and cowered behind retail displays as shot after shot rang
out.
Hawkins’ friend and landlady Debora Maruca Kovac told CNN
she received a call from an upset Hawkins before the shooting in which
he told her he’d left a note "explaining everything".
When Kovac – who’d taken the troubled Hawkins into her home 18 months ago – asked what he meant, he put down the phone.
She said she raised the alarm after reading the note.
"He
just said (in the note) how he was sorry for everything, that he didn’t
want to be a burden any longer to anybody, that he loved his family and
he loved all of his friends."
"He said he was a piece of shit all his life" and Kovac said he’d used the words: "Now I’ll be famous."
