Dan Hannan Bottles It

Sadly so:

Not a full-scale voucher scheme…

Why not a full-scale voucher scheme?

  1. Fair point Tim, but why on earth don’t we focus on sorting out the appalling vocational education first before we start worrying about school choice? The former is crippling our economy far more than the latter.

  2. Letter from a Tory,
Do you really believe the state can fix a problem it created? Set the schools free with a voucher/tax credit system. Before you know it a “Plumbers School” will be set up and pumping out plumbers.

  3. Letters From A Tory:
A voucher system would sort that out if there’s demand.

  4. Hannan’s piece is pathetic.
I have a lot of sympathy with the Leftist contention that private schools create an “educational apartheid”. Segregating children on the basis of their parents’ wealth offends something deep inside most of us.
It does not offend me at all. What offends me is the lax discipline in state schools that permits a few thugs to disrupt lessons, bully fellow pupils, carry knives, deal in drugs, etc.

  5. I wonder if Hannan is offended by people who send their children to state schools and then spend large amounts of money on expensive cultural holidays, up-to-date computers, possibly extra tuition? And if he is not offended then why not?
