Hmmm. I actually know someone who knows who Belle du Jour is. Unfortunately, she’s not telling. Still, is there a clue in this report about the new TV adaptation?
The Secret Diary of a Call Girl is based on an anonymous internet blog, Belle
de Jour, which purportedly was written by a London prostitute who goes by
the pseudonym Belle. The blog, documenting Belle’s sexual escapades, was
turned into a best-selling novel.

Do people pay BdJ royalties for this sort of thing? The BBC ought to tell her to f*** off and wait until she sues for copyright infringement, that way we find out who she is, ta da!

Recourse to Amazon quickly establishes that there is now an established genre of books, supposedly all by literary-minded call-girls and working-calls – as well as by dedicated amateurs – who write in feisty prose of the enticing challenge and attractive remuneration of a venerable profession. Obviously, the genre is definitely in demand but in past times of more uncertain job prospects, I distinctly recall official encouragement about turning hobbies into paid employment so perhaps it’s not altogether surprising that some heeded that advice.
I suppose the next steps is VAT ragistration and then learned papers in academic journals about the economic characteristics of this professional market – perhaps something along the lines of this:
