What would be really interesting, as this is to do with alternative sources of energy, would be to know what amount of additional energy input is required to produce the electronic-grade gallium. I am sceptical that the EROEI (the energy-return on energy invested) of this sort of hydrogen production will be attractive.

Tim adds: Well, we don’t want to produce electronic grade here, only low grade. Also, we’re not worried about EROEI at all. We’re interested in being able to use currently static sources of energy (hydro, wind maybe?) to produce car transport.
I’ve no idea whether it will turn out to be a good idea or not: was only makingthe point that there’s lots of gallium around.
