John Beddington

Here’s hoping, that with someone who looks at the economics of fisheries and conservation, we actually get some policies which are effective in conserving fisheries by employing some economics:

One of Britain’s leading environmental researchers has been chosen by Gordon
Brown as the Government’s new chief scientist, The Times has learnt.

John Beddington, Professor of Applied Population Biology at Imperial College,
London, will succeed Professor Sir David King as the Chief Scientific
Adviser when he steps down at the end of the year.

Professor Beddington, who originally trained as an economist, specialises in
applying economics and biology to the sustainable management of renewable
resources, particularly fisheries.

It’ll certainly be interesting to see his views on the CFP: that system which is wiping out the fish stocks of Europe because it blatantly ignores the most basic principles of economics.

  1. Glad you mention the CFP (but then I would expect nothing else). It makes no odds what any adviser of Gordon Brown’s advises. The CFP is decided by political negotiations between 27 countries. We have no control. Incidentally, the Tories did produce a paper on what to do about the fisheries after we repatriate them under Michael Howard and it was accepted as policy. The paper tried to take various economic, scientific and geographical factors into account. The first thing David Cameron did was to ditch it.

I’d normally expect to poke fun at the idea of a “Chief Scientist” who may never have done an experiment in his life, except that his predecessor had done experiments and fell for the non-experimental charlatans of Goebbels Warning.
