Visiting Jamaica

After the delights of this summer just past (you didn’t go away for two days and miss it, did you?) time perhaps to plan the autumn holiday to make up for it. Cue the old one about the wife going to the Caribbean. Jamaica? No, she went of her own accord. Ho ho.

Actually, in my family it wouldn’t be the wife who got to go to Jamaica, it would be me. Yes, yes, there’s the opportunity to catch up on where all the Jamaican music came from and the Jamaican cuisine, but that’s not the part that would interest me.

This is:

Mudlake3

I slightly pity the environmental site I got that from, it’s not acidic, it’s alkaline. But much more than that, it’s money, or at least potentially so. Jamaica is pretty much made out of bauxite and once you’ve extracted the alumina this is what you have left, red mud. Which is 100-120 ppm scandium. And, yes, we’ve started to take the plunge, we’re being pushed into it by customers who don’t want to rely upon supplies from Russia much longer. We’ve got to work out a way of extracting the scandium from that stuff.

And where better than Jamaica ? Do a bit to clean up the environment, eat the food, drink the rum, listen to the music and try and make some money at the same time?

This probably isn’t quite the ad the tourist boosters wanted, but they did say give personal reasons fo visiting the island. 🙂

Apart from the oh-so-tempting joke about being pushed into a pool of alkali mud by a customer, I’d like to wish you every success. May you enjoy the rollercoaster ride and make your fortune.

Lotta bauxite in Australia, we got the rum, we got the girls, and we even got the food too, but the music? I suppose there is Peter Garrett, but I wouldn’t wish him on anyone.
