Tory Crime Fighting Proposals

This is a Tory idea?

Give all employees with children the right to request flexible working.

Aren’t they aware that each and every person in the country already has the right to request flexible working? There’s no law against doing so, so it is indeed a right as anyone can negotiate a private contract that does not breach the law.

Sheesh.

  1. Maybe they mean “right to demand” or that the onus shifts more to the employer to prove they cannot. A nightmare.
There will be a host of unforeseen consequences for that one.

  2. I hate my fucking party!

  3. I suspect they mean the right to request it and, as Roger says, the onus to be on the employer to find reasons why the job can’t be done with flexible hours. That’s how requests for job-shares & part-time hours work.
Most of my jobs seem to have had flexible hours for years. I stay for as long as is needed to get the job done or I get fired.

  4. We seem to be moving into a world where there are so many laws in existence that nobody knows which laws are active and which ones are not.
As far as I was aware, this law already exists! The idea is that the employer has the right to refuse if the employee is being unreasonable.
Of course, in the world of political media, employees are never unreasonable and all employers have many millions of pounds hidden in the back which morally belongs to the employees!

“already has the right to request flexible working”
    to which must be appended:
“… and have the request seriously considered with the right to piss and moan to a pseudo-independent regulator who will view the denial with the prejudice of an outreach coordinator.”
