Radio Four’s You and Yours discusses inequalities of wealth – with Polly Toynbee, Camila Batmanghelidjh and I think some chap from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
The consensus ? More government spending.

I sat in the car this lunchtime, listening to the collective wisdom of Polly & Co. It was truly, awesomely depressing. I switched off at about 1.40.

What a selection. How on EARTH are they going to get a balanced view?
The Rountree Foundation seems to be getting ever more attached to the State teat, a lobbying vehicle instead of a true charity…but then again that is what Labour and the State want charities to be, so they can then police what they are “allowed” to support to retain charitable status.
Camila does say some insightful things about what has damaged young people and hints at the competing tangles of their minds, but if she is not careful she will be seduced by State funding and the value of her words will diminish.
As for Polly…Merry-go-Round more than caravan.
I too recognised the dulcet tones of Ms Toynbee emanating across the airwaves, babbling on about sensible taxation rates for the rich and the joys of Sure Start. Had to switch over to Planet Rock to recover.
Does anyone believe for even one minute that Ms Toynbee would have unfettered access to media if she didn’t have a dynasty behind her and views that are palatable to the BBC statists? Remember, this woman never gained a degree in any specialism (not that I hold that against her but when did the BBC or Grauniad ever employ anyone without an arts degree?) and apparently was a typist at the Grauniad. Nobody ever questions her horribly muddled ramblings.
Mark, you seem to be close to saying people without degrees cannot be experts in anything. That’s rather elitist, don’t you think?

That explains a lot…..
It was quite excruciating. I couldn’t listen to more than 20 seconds at a time.
Matthew… I mean exactly the opposite. A degree doesn’t necessarily count for anything, let alone expertise. My point was, that the lefty types who control much of the access to professions in the public sector, are normally very strong on candidates for jobs having degrees. The fact that Polly had no such qualification meant she only got her job because her views were in sympathy with the left. If a right wing, non-graduate wanted a column on the Grauniad, I doubt they would have got a look in.
Well Max Hastings doesn’t have a degree either!.

Matthew, can you explain why you believe mentioning Max Hasting’s lack of a degree somehow negates criticism of someone else’s lack of a degree?
