Ahhh…some proof of what has long been suspected:
A second substantial problem is the pressure from the Government to
increase adoptions from care. The Local Government Association warned
that these targets would lead to adoptions of children that could
otherwise remain with their birth parents. When children hit 16 and
escape the control of the state and can leave care, research shows that
70 per cent return to their parents. Scotland does not have the
adoption targets and about two-thirds of their children under five that
leave care go home to their parents. In England, the number of children
under five adopted as a percentage of those taken into care is more
than 60 per cent. I estimate that around 1,000 children a year are
wrongfully adopted. This is storing up massive problems for the future.
Isn’t it lovely the way having targets distorts incentives?
It will take a lot of effort to put our family law system right.
No, not really. Make it public. Justice must be seen to be done for it to be done.
