Excellent News!

No, seriously:

Lovers of pinot grigio, chardonnay and Italian sparkling wines should brace
themselves for a shortage because the unprecedented heat this spring and
summer has caused grapes to ripen a month earlier than usual.

The good news is that the quality of white wine from Italy’s northeastern
regions will be exceptional — but the quantity will be lower.

Pickers were brought in to begin the grape harvest in the Veneto and Trentino
regions yesterday, the first time in living memory that a harvest has taken
place in early August.

Better quality wine and less of it. That’ll help deal with over production, hey, we might even be able to get rid of the subsidies and the idiocy of making the stuff into industrial alcohol.

Who said climate change was all bad?

  1. Unfortunately, the producers I spoke to when I was in the Languedoc were lamenting the excessive rain – poorer quality and, from those who do not increase their selectivity in picking, greater quantity.

Relatively little that is drinkable emerges from the Languedoc, SE. As for Italy, who cares? The ‘New World’ producers will simply fill the gap in the market.

  3. Climate change was always going to be not too bad for Europe, it is the third world that really gets shafted.
