An extremely interesting book is about to be published, edited by Sheherazade Goldsmith. Hints and tips fo living a better life, how to walk lightly upon this earth:
Keep a few geese
Keeping geese seems to have gone a
little out of fashion, which is perhaps surprising, as they produce
delicious free-range eggs and premium organic meat. They’re also
effective burglar alarms and need little care. Start by buying a goose
and gander: they will form a bond that will last their lifetime. If you
want geese for both eggs and meat, buy at least two geese and one
gander so that if you slaughter one goose, the other won’t be left
alone.
The essential kit for goosekeepers includes fresh water,
open pasture, feed trough, goose house, and either an informal or an
upright nest house. Geese need to be taught where their home is. If
your new arrivals are not used to a goose house, keep them penned up in
it with a large outdoor mesh run for a few days to get them accustomed
to their new surroundings. Allow your geese to forage for their own
food: 80% of their food will come from grass and weeds. If sufficient
natural food is not available, provide chopped greens (cabbage leaves,
kale and lettuce) and cereals (wholegrains).
Make sure the geese
always have mixed grit (the small stones help their digestion to work)
freely available. Geese need access to some water – a clean pond with
proper drainage is ideal. However, unlike ducks, a water trough that is
deep enough to allow the geese to dip their heads in and bathe (to
avoid skin parasites and sore eyes) will be an adequate substitute. In
summer you should ensure that your geese have plenty of shade, as they
are prone to sunstroke.
Useful advice, I’m sure you will agree. Marry the son of a billionaire and live on a three hundred acre farm seems to be how you start.
I’m not all that sure this advice is universally applicable though: how do you do this when you’re crammed into the 40 houses per hectare that the planning system insists that the proles must live in? Urged on, of course, by those Greens who insist that we must preserve rural England.
