Norris v. Boris

Err, something I’m not quite getting here. Is the position of candidate for the Conservative Party in the London Mayoral elections something which is reserved solely for serial shaggers?

Did John Major decline because he had an insufficient number of notches on the bedpost?

  1. Well they are rather worried they don’t have a big hitter so they are getting a bit desperate. They have some perfectly good candidates like Dr Lee Rotherham but that does not seem to be good enough for some. Dr Lee has just released his first campaign video.

  2. I think the tradition of London mayors as populist libertines goes back at least as far the celebrated libertarian John Wilkes (1725-97):

Those were the days. Sir Francis Dashwood, one of Wilkes’ drinking companions and the founding member of the Hell Fire Club to which Wilkes belonged, served briefly as Chancellor of the Exchequer (1762/3):

What I’m not clear about is how all this accords with the revived commitment to restore the ascendancy of family values but then perhaps I’ve missed something.

  4. From the lack of further posted comments here, it rather looks as though no one really gives a s**t.
Me, I’m still puzzling about how the renewed commitment to family values fits in when, I assume, it will be a prominent part of the Conservative manifesto for London.
