Under the 1841 School Sites Act, landowners were encouraged to grant
land to the Church for education, with the proviso that if the usage
changed, ownership would revert to their descendants.
Of course, the Church, as with any other bureaucracy, has been fighting for years to keep the money rather than hand it over to those who it legally belongs to.
Something of a pity that this is a result of a specific piece of legislation actually. Wouldn’t it be fun if charitable institutions like St Barts etc were subject to the same strictures? The NHS nationalization of the 1940s would be throwing up some pretty interesting results around now, wouldn’t it?
