Talibani Websites

There’s only one small problem I have with this.

I agree, it is only a small one.

But, but, you see, I believe in the freedom of speech.

Really believe.

Yes, even for religious nutters, enemies of liberal civilization, bearded maniacs and all.

If we don’t have freedom of speech then we’re not actuallly a liberal civilization, are we?

And if we’re not a liberal civilization, what actually is the damn bloody point?

Update: Thinking about this a little more overnight (and without beer goggles) perhaps I am indeed being too absolutist. As Rusty has pointed out, this is the official Taleban site, who we are supposedly at war with (although to be sure, I’m not actually certain that we have indeed "declared war" in the formal sense, have we?).

But even if we are, I think I’d still prefer to have this in the open than closed down. Just as, during WWII, we didn’t try to lock up people who listened to Lord Haw Haw, trusting rather to their judgement.

I agree that we did hang him afterwards, but then that was one of the more appalling miscarriages of justice perpetrated under our system. (For those who don’t know, as he wasn’t a Brit he couldn’t be prosecuted for treason. But we did. There’s also stories that he was told not to appeal otherwise his wife/girlfriend would also be hung…although that is rumour which I’m remembering, perhaps wrongly.)

What’s the problem with Taliban websites?
They are only saying what a lot of Muslims think. Better that we know what they really think than being sold this crap about “religion of peace” and so on.

  2. Excellent questions, Tim. Too many can be easily frightened into exchanging freedom for the false promise of secruity. They always get less of both in return.
As for the Taliban sites, I’m with Mark: Far better to have them broadcasting so we know what they are thinking then operating entirely underground leaving us wondering.
Sunlight: Not just a great disinfectant but a good defence as well.

Well I agree that where necessary such webpages should be penetrated but left running for intelligence purposes but if we can destroy enemy propoganda mechanisms then why not do it? Freedom of speech for citizens is one thing, what entitles the Taliban to such freedoms exactly?

I’m not sure if we have ever been at war with the Taleban, although we have been at war with the Taleban administration in AFG.
In the case of the so-called Talebani websites, why are these domains hosted/registered in the United States? Pinging and tracerouting both show that these sites are based in the States.
The ‘Taleban’ site linked to (including pics of guys showing off with missile launchers and automatic guns), http://www.alemarah.org, is sited in Tampa Bay Florida (not exactly the sort of place where the national security machine and local business would be welcoming to Taleban ideologues plying their trade).
The Taleban discussion forum (‘stop by over here with your opium pipe when you get the chance’) w-n-n.net is registered either to SiteGenie Corporation, Wilmington, Delaware, United States to another US organisation based in Rochester.
Why?? What’s really going on here I wonder? Where is the real Baron Munchhausen?
