EU Statistics

I’m really not sure that I believe this:

But while four in five British beaches received the top European grading, in
Greece not one of 2,047 resorts failed the test, with 96.9 per cent classed
as excellent.

Cyprus could also claim to have Europe’s best beaches, with 99 of its 100
resorts classed as excellent.

Every single Greek beach? Err, who was doing the testing, or is that too cynical?

  1. According to Euronews this morning, countries can “delist” beaches from the study, thus leading to skewed results. Apparently no reason needs to be given for a delisting.A
Not that the tourism-driven Greek economy would have anything to gain from this slightly dubious practice. Ah.

  2. And c’mon, which would you rather be on – a Greek beach or a British one??
Tim adds: Well, when I want to be on one I usually cycle the 11 km down the hill to the one in Albufeira….

  3. As someone who has spent the odd day or five collecting biological samples from a range of Greek beaches, i can tell you i wouldn’t step foot on some of them normally!
After all, you would never find raw sewage on a beach over here these days. Oh hang on…
