Ellee Seymour asks:
After waiting 13 years for his moment of glory, why must Gordon Brown wait another 42 days before he can become Prime Minister? What is the reason for this delay?
To give someone a chance to top him first?

To give Tony Blair time to think up an excuse why he should dissolve Parliament and call a snap election.
With nobody standing against him the only point of Bliar holding the ring during the election is gone. Hopefully he will be too.

To be serious, there has to be a lot of hand-over stuff to go through. He will need to be briefed into intelligence compartments he has not had access to before, the question of which of his aides are coming across with him has to be answered, new stationery has to be printed, etc. etc. ad nauseam.
