Sainsbury’s Soft Drinks

Excellent:

Sainsbury’s is to be the first supermarket to remove artificial colours and flavours from its own-brand soft drinks.

The supermarket announced that from June, its range of 120 fizzy drinks and cordials will contain only natural ingredients.

Fruit and vegetable extracts will replace artificial ingredients.

The decision comes in response to customer concerns about the effect of E numbers on children.

Sucralose, which is made from sugar, will replace the artificial sweetener aspartame.

That’ll solve the obesity crisis, don’t you think? Putting more calories into soda pop?

    well maybe not, but it sounds like a product I’d prefer to buy, so well done Sainsbury far as I’m concerned

    I don’t think the problem is with E numbers per se. The problem is with some E numbers. For instance:
    E150a Plain caramel
    E162 Beetroot Red; Betanin
    E300 Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C)
    E260 Acetic acid
    E290 Carbon dioxide
    E330 Citric acid
    E938 Argon
    E939 Helium
    E941 Nitrogen
    E948 Oxygen
    Nothing particularly nasty in the above. But call a substance an E number, and regardless of what it is, some people get silly.

    Sucralose isn’t sugar. It is about 600 times as sweet as sugar. The calorific value in Sainsbury’s drinks depends on how much they put in, but sucralose contains about 2 calories per 5ml.
    For E number watchers, the E number for sucralose is E955.

    As said above, Sucralose isn’t sugar but its sugar derived.
    Its brand name is Splenda.
    My diabetic fiancee uses it a lot.

    Aspartame becomes a poison when raised to a certain temperature.
    That temperature happens to be 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit.
    Body temperature. Aspartame might just BE the cause of obesity.
    Oh oh, here come the scientists to shoot ne down !

    I used to drink 2L of Sainbury’s Diet Classic Cola everyday and liked the taste better than any other diet colas. Now the recipe has changed, it tastes vile, and has a washing liquid-like after taste. It is disgusting enough to make you want to drink water instead!
