Apparently Royal’s failure to win outright in the first round was the same reason that Michael Foot lost the 1983 election. The manifesto just wasn’t left wing enough. Nice to know they have political nutters the other side of the Channel too.

Exactly, had she been a bit more left wing, then clearly Le Pen, Sarkozy and the other chap (Bayroux?) wouldn’t have got sixty per cent of the votes.

I couldn’t comment on the content of La Sego’s campaign and it’s degree of leftiness – quite frankly I haven’t been that interested. But of the reports about the elections I couldn’t avoid, it seemed like a big part of her campaign was based around an “I’ve got boobs and not just in my cabinet” soundbite.
Mayhap the French electorate are a little more grown up and are looking for something a little more substantial in their future head of state.
