One Day of Silence

Hunh? As Outside the Beltway reports, there’s a group who thinks that we should all stop blogging for one day on April 30th in memoriam of those who died at Virginia Tech.

Yes, 32 (33, depending upon how you wish to count) being shot is indeed a tragedy but in the global scale of things a rather minor one.

There are apparently 500,000 murders a year, globally. Well over 1,000 a day on average.

If we all stopped for a day (whether it be blogging or anything else) when the number went over 32 for a day then nothing would ever happen.

Something of a silly idea I fear.

  1. The day after the VT shootings, nearly 200 innocents were killed in Iraq bombings. How long do I have to stop blogging to atone for that?

I once stole a packet of Jolly Ranchers from the corner shop. Stop blogging for five minutes, please.

  3. Another public “grief fest” methinks.
By he way, how many soccer matches had kick offs delayed for “minutes of silence” yesterday?
