Supermarkets

Slightly odd:

A more revealing survey last week revealed that one in every seven
pounds in the UK is now spent at Tesco. There is no doubt that
supermarkets are convenient, but no one asked us if we wanted our local
shops to go, and no one asked us if we want the hermetically sealed,
refrigerated, bland food that supermarkets often provide. Growing
vegetables feels like taking a stand: a defiant act of
self-determination.

Of couse we were asked, indeed are asked, constantly. In fact, every time you open your wallet or don’t you’re registering your opinion, answering that question. Don’t like what the supermarkets sell? So, don’t buy it. Pretty simple really.

Unfortunately, this choice was denied me when my local authority refused Tesco permission to build a store in town. The decision was largely based on a petition raised by existing traders afraid for their margins, and, presumably, on the anti-Tesco bollocks so often reported in the MSM and swallowed whole by its readers. However, I still have the option of using tesco.com, who deliver for a small fee.

There has been a lot of criticism directed at TESCO recently. Is this because it is customer orientated and succesful?

  3. I find the worst culprits are those who complaining of how Tesco is ruining their small town – while shopping there at a time when all the other small traders have gone home for the night!
Supermarkets are able to grow because they offer convenience. I want to buy milk at 11.15pm. I want o be able to buy cat food at 6.45am. If a small shop can do this, I will shop there, but most of them won’t as they are too busy complaining about Tesco!

  4. Ah. Tesco again. I count myself a very lucky person indeed. I have a choice of 4 Tescos (one of which is a Tesco Extra), 2 Sainsburys, an Asda, a Morrisons and a Waitrose. All within 5 miles of my humble abode. I also have 24- hour local shops within a short walk. I despise Asda and Tesco, for various reasons which are mostly to do with “customer experience” issues. To my great delight, my local shops sell fruit and veg at a lower price than any of the supermarkets. Lucky me indeed.
