The Dud Petrol

An interesting explanation for that dud batch of petrol from the Sunday Times.

The silicon was found in four “finishing” tanks used only by Harvest
Energy, in which fuel is blended with additives to make it ready for
car engines. These include the chemical toluene, which is understood to
have contained the silicon.

Who understood the toluene to contain silicon?

C7H8?

You know, however long I look at that I still can’t see any Si there.

Don’t these people have editors?

Toluene contains silicon like sea water contains salt, no?

Observe too that toluene is that really nasty thing, a “chemical”.

    KT:
The problem won’t be with silicon – a solid, the stuff you make computer chips with – but, I’d guess, with silicones. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicone).
I suspect that the whole thing will boil down either to someone having over-dosed petrol with desired additives, or to accidental contamination with undesired compounds. We’ll soon know.
