UKIP Again

Oh my, Oh, my.

Last month The Daily Telegraph revealed that Ukip was
hoping to change its campaigning name to the Independence Party in an
effort to broaden its appeal.

But the commission
said yesterday that it had already informally warned Ukip that such a
change was "very unlikely" to be accepted.

Electoral Commission rules, from their website:

Party names can only include any of the following words:
• Independent/
Annibynnol
• Official
• Unofficial
where they are qualified by another word or expression other than the registered
name of a registered party, the word ‘party’, or any of the words ‘independent’
(and/or ‘Annibynnol’ in Wales), ‘official’ or ‘unofficial’.
Example box A3
A party could not register the name Independent Party or the Unofficial Party.
Similarly, a party could not register the name Independent Liberal Democrat
Party or Unofficial Green Party.
However, a party could be registered in the name Independent Action Against
Cutbacks.

Err….didn’t anybody check?

This shouldn’t be a problem for UKIP. Firstly there was and is no plan to drop the UK, just lessen its importance. So a slogan like,
“Vote UKIP, the Independence Party”, would, as far as I understand it be perfectly fine.
This is a bit of a fiction, as the Telegraph rather misrepresented the name change affair in the first place. It was never the intention to drop the UK in its entirety, just downplay it.
Much as the Tories don’t often mention “and Unionist”.

  2. What the hell has this got to do with the Electoral Commission? They should be able to call themselves the fucking Fancy Dress Party if they want.

  3. David: it’s a perfectly sensible restriction to stop members of organised political parties (in the broadest sense of “organised”, which includes UKIP) from calling themselves “Independent”, which is reserved for genuine independents. UKIP can indeed call themselves the “Fancy Dress Party” if they want because this isn’t a reserved description. I am not sure if they could call themselves the “Fucking Fancy Dress Party” as I suspect that there is a general requirement that party names not be obscene.

UKIP wanted the name Independence Party, meaning Independence not Independents’ Party. Difference.
Independence of federal control rather than a group of independent candidates.
