You do have to think that someone at The Torygraph doesn’t like UKIP really. Another story on the party accounts.
Hundreds of thousands of pounds donated to the UK Independence Party
has failed to find its way into the party’s central accounts, a senior
Ukip official has confirmed.
David Campbell-Bannerman, the party’s deputy leader,
has said that only 15 per cent of funds donated to Ukip through a call
centre in Kent has been paid into the party’s head office accounts.
Outrage
over the Ashford call centre has been blamed for the resignations of at
least six senior party officials over the past 18 months.
Five
former members of the party’s national executive committee, Ukip’s
governing body, have told this newspaper they believe about £500,000 is
unaccounted for in the party’s head office accounts.
These
claims are disputed by Ukip’s leader, Nigel Farage. "All the money
raised by Ashford can be seen in the accounts for the south-east unit –
no money has disappeared," he said.
Quite disgusting don’t you think? Why, the temerity of it: money raised staying at the level at which it was raised. Just think what would happen if this caught on. Tory constituency parties would raise their own money, using it locally, sending into the centre only what they wished to. Labour and Lib Dem local party organisations would run their own accounts, their own bank accounts, raising cash locally from the activists to spend locally on local campaigns and activities.
I mean, really, can you imagine the chaos that would ensue if such things were allowed to happen? Where would local politics and democracy be if it were not rigidly controlled from the centre? Surely everyone can see that UKIP have dreadfully overstepped the boundaries of acceptable political behaviour here?
