Didn’t Simon Heffer…

….say he was a libertarian?

On top of that the state now believes that a child brought up by two
women or two men is likely to be just as well adjusted as those brought
up by a man and a woman: and in this they have the explicit support of
the leader of the Conservative Party. So even if the mainstream idea of
what parenting is, or should be, still remains, forces are at work
trying to persuade those who hold that view to change it.

He seems to disagree with this thought. Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the libertarian view rather that this is none of the State’s damn business?

  1. Heffer’s a wally and a thug, and I thought you’d be able to find better things to do with your time than actually give thought to his verbal vomitings.

There might be a legit role for the State here. Unless we just go for Free Trade in buying and selling small children.

  3. Simon Heffer’s claim to be libertarian is just hilarious. I call myself conservative just be sure people don’t mistake me for a libertarian, and Heffer is way down the other end of the libertarian-authoritarian axis. I don’t know why but it’s somehow become fashionable to call oneself libertarian even when completely inappropriate. Anyway, I can’t stand Heffer anyway.

Theoretically, but for the meanwhile any libertarian with a brain has to figure out what policies to pursue.
To clarify there are 3 options
    1) state keeps the hell out of families
    2) state works to maintain tradtional family structure
    3) state works to actively destroy traditional family structure.
A libertarian will always work towards (1), but, if only presented with a choice between (2) and (3), may very well plump for the former.

  5. Er and a libertarian doesn’t have to support harmful behaviour – harmful to third parties that is. Why would a lib support policies he believes to harm children? I’m with Simon – I’ve got four kids, I see every single day how they benefit from, and respond to, the dual and very different inputs of a man and a woman. It’s fine to state, based on some ideological grounds, that a same sex couple is just as effective as a mixed couple, but quite another to *prove* it. Till I see proof,I’ll believe what I see around me; kids need a mom, and a dad. Preferably married. Preferably living in the same home. Preferably with slippers, roses around the door, possibly cardigans. Seriously.

  6. I’m sure frank f is correct in his own case : –
“It’s fine to state, based on some ideological grounds, that a same sex couple is just as effective as a mixed couple, but quite another to *prove* it.”
But it rather depends on the couple, don’t it?
    Exhibit 1 – Fred & Rose West.
    Exhibit 2 – Vita Sackville-West & Harold Nicolson.
And on the child. I posited the in t’Graun the other day the not-hypothetical case of a girl raped day in,day out by every male member of her family.
Just possibly it might be better for her to be fostered/adopted by an all-female household?

  7. Percentages and increments Dave – as I’m sure you know full well. Take 1000 kids raised in conventional families, 1000 in same sex, check on them at 5, 15, 25 and 50 – oh yes, 50. You’re not going to get a realistic appraisal of their well-being and balance till then. See if there’s a statistically significant difference in happiness, health, relationships etc etc.
Anyone done that study? Nope, I thought not…

  8. That nasty piece of spiteful pus that calls itself Heffer showed its true colours when it talked about murdered “tarts” in Ipswich.
