Women of an Age on the Box

Mary Anne Seighart bemoans the fact that women rich in age and maturity don’t get seen on our TV screens.

You find this on TV, too. The impossibly gorgeous Anna Ford is never
seen any more on our screens, while Sir Trevor McDonald carries on.

Odd really, as I was watching TV last night (it happens rarely) and there was Anna Ford hosting "Have I Got News for You".

Some 91 per cent of women around the world (rising to 94 per cent in
Britain) believe it is time for society to change its views about women
and ageing.

What is this "society" that has a single view? And how do you change it? Isn’t that something of a reification of the disparate thoughts of 60 million people?

  1. Oh come now Tim – general views in “society” do change over time, as witness by the fact that, well, they just do. For goodness sake. How to change views, should you wish to, well that’s a different matter.

  2. The sentiment is quite clear. The women surveyed believe that men in positions of power should stop being so bloody sexist and ageist. And so they should.
When you sneer like this at the way a sentiment is expressed, it looks to me as though it’s cover for your disagreement with it.

  3. I prefer looking at young, pretty women. ITV’s weather girls are superb, and the BBC needs to get its act together in this department.

I prefer looking at handsome, youthful men. BBC News is a bit shit on that front as well. Although, not half as shit as BBC Scotland.

Do you remember when her every article boiled down to “Seig Heil, Toni”?

    Aw bugger, “Sieg Heil”.

  7. I think men will stop preferring pretty women to plain ones, when women stop preferring rich, successful men to mediocrities.
