Fool:

Women who have caesareans as a "lifestyle choice" rather than for
medical reasons should have to pay for their treatment, a leading
public health expert said yesterday.

They pay already. It’s called taxation.

  1. Indeed they do… but perhaps it should be a surcharge. It’s a long time since we had surcharges on public services in the UK (remember supplementary rates bills?) . Must be time for a revival.

    Tim, your conversion is to statism is thrilling and alarming at the same time. We’ve had demands for an army of burueacrats to calculate CO2 emissions and tax them, a network of satellites monitoring people’s whereabouts for road pricing, a demand that the government create its own businesses rather than use the private sector, and now this claim that once you pay taxes, you have a right to whatever you want on the government bill.
    I can’t help but think you must be after a spot on CiF?
    Tim adds: A number of people have indeed suggested my name for a spot on CiF. Georgina Henry has so far held out against such an obviously sensible idea.
