The Greening of CAP

So the Boy Mili reads a speech from Brussels:

Farmers in the future will not be given any support for food
production, the Environment Secretary, David Miliband, will say today.
Instead they will be helped to maintain landscapes and tackle climate
change.

Well, yes, OK, how delightful. Then look at what this actually means:

Frank Langrish’s family farms 1,500 acres at the west
end of Romney Marsh, near Rye, Sussex. Their land includes a low-lying
area with dykes and a viable population of water voles. The Langrishes’
farm is part of the entry level and the higher level scheme. The
payments are for farming with fewer livestock and raising water levels
for resident and migratory birds.

Payment was due
on Nov 15 but the Langrishes have received nothing, even though they
have invested heavily in equipment to control the water level in the
dykes.

Mr Langrish said: "They have told me everything is in order but I got a call before Christmas to say there is still a glitch."

David Theaker farms 550 acres near Sleaford, Lincs, of which 180 acres
is in the entry level scheme. He says he is owed £3,500 which was due
in November.

This is of course a European Union scheme, not something that we have introduced off our own bat. It’s also a glory of centralized managerialism, don’t you think? Every single acre of farmland right across the continent must be used in accordance with the wishes of those delightful bureaucrats sitting in Brussels. My word what a free and pleasant land it will be!

Why nationalise the means of production when you can simply regulate them instead? And when will the peasants march upon their rulers?

  1. Am I being naive to think if subsidies stopped then marginal land would no longer be farmed and would return to its natural state?

  2. Why nationalise the means of production when you can simply regulate them instead?
This is what I think, whenever I hear someone (usually of lefty persuasion) opine that Tony Blair is a Conservative.
He simply realised the truth of your statement and understood that Clause 4 was unnecessary. Far from being conservative, he simply updated socialism.
