It really is something of a pity that the people running the EU fisheries monstrosity would not be able to run the proverbial whelk stall. Further, those who report on the don’t seem too hot either.
British fishermen have been ordered to reduce their catches of cod by
up to 20 per cent next year in a bid to reduce chronic overfishing.
No, they haven’t been ordered to reduce their catches by any amount at all. They’ve had the amount of their catch that they can legally land and sell reduced by 20%. Given that bycatch (cod caught while people are looking for other fish, that they don’t have quota for and which are therefore thrown dead back into the sea. No, they’re not even allowed to even give it to someone who does have quota) is greater than the quota that can be landed already, cutting the quota really isn’t going make a difference at all to the amount of cod caught and killed: which is the important thing from a conservation point of view of course.
The article really ought to say that politicians are incompetent in dealing with a real world problem: but then that’s hardly man bites dog sort of stuff, is it?
