The Biggest Cash Crop

This report puzzles me a little:

Marijuana is now the biggest cash crop grown in the US, exceeding
traditional harvests such as wheat, corn and soy beans, says a new
report.

I’d actually thought that had been true for years. Maybe it was just California though, for a decade ago it was one of those bar room ‘facts’ that was passed around, that dope was the State’s largest cash crop.

Hell no. The Drug Warriors’ loopy crusade hands the dope growers a vast subsidy by artificially limiting

  3. …limiting supply.

  4. That is /so/ true David, the illegality of the drug is what makes it valuable, nothing else. It’s a very easy to grow weed, it costs nothing to grow if you have a little space and a hot sun!
This means the government is actually sponsoring criminal activity by their continued ridiculous prohibition.
But hell I suppose its better than the alternative, the buggering up of the pharmaceutical, clothing, alcohol and other industries were hemp grown en-masse… (for the benefit of any americans reading, this paragraph is sarcasm)

  5. Yeah, yeah, but that’s not a subsidy. I’ll bet that some of it does get a subsidy through subsidised water.

  6. So restriction of the imported cane sugar supply isn’t a subsidy for US beet sugar growers? Any government-supported action that distorts a market in favour of one class of suppliers is a subsidy.
