Not quite as daft as it sounds. Even though it is still officially part of military doctrine, the use of parachute assaults was totally discredited in WWII (Arnhem etc). Military parachute training is basically a badge-of-honour thing used to give the paras an elite image and foster cohesion within the unit. Paras refer to other military units, not too affectionately, as “crap hats”, because their own cap badges, with para wings, are obviously the far superior to everyone else.
Removal of parachute training for paras it will have relatively little effect on military capability, but whether it has any detrimental effect on morale is another point; paras will become “crap-hats” just like the rest of the army. So very non-elitist, it could have been dreamt up by the LibDems.
