The Licence Fee: It’s a Tax

It appears to be official now that the BBC licence fee is a tax, not a service charge.

  1. Oh yes I saw that when I was doing my CBI posts, but didn’t see the significance of the point. I left the BBC and its tax out of my revenue calculations though so it was a wash either way.

  2. The Office of National Statistics changed this earlier this year.

    It does seem right – the licence fee is a tax.

    Well I’m officially a Tax Avoider.
    and Proud! Now to work on the 50% of my salary the state extorts.

  4. The thing that ticks me off about it is that if one *doesn’t* have a TV, they make you go through a whole rigmarole to prove it to them – letters, phone calls where they say things like “What! You don’t have a television! Are you sure?”.
    Rather than engaging with it this time, I am just throwing the letters in the bin.
