Times Watch

Oh dear:

The most noticeable characteristic of the fount was a more flowing line with less prominent lower-case ascenders and descenders.

And The Times’ Leaders are the font of all wisdom I suppose?

Update: And the comments are flooding in noting that Timmy is wrong! Just another normal day then, eh?

  1. If you’re pointing out the use of fount, then its misplaced. Fount is somewhat archaic, but it is a valid alternative for font (the only other person I’ve known use it was an elderly computer science lecturer).

  2. Nope that falls under “Worstall watch” and excessive pendantry. Fount is the original usage and I think the one used in more technical typographical discussions. Definitely a Bitish vs American thing though too

  3. How annoying. Two other people got in first.
It’s an archaic term cos all us ‘proper’ typesetters don’t exist any more. Personally I think the state should have subsidised us.

It’s not a British vs American thing – according to the OED both spellings have been used since the 17th century.
