Margot Doesn’t Get It.

Looks like TEBAF (The Ever etc) Margot really doesn’t quite get this democracy gig.

This was the first time that the Commission has consulted civil society
on communication policy. To me it is crucial that it is made into a
tool for democracy. When “Vlaams Belang“ has 33.5% of voters in
Antwerpen, when neo-Nazis mobilise voters in Germany, when the
xenophobic party “Sverigedemokraterna” gets seats in half of the
Swedish municipalities – can there be a more important issue for us
than to fight for democracy, solidarity and equal rights ?!

So, the people are voting for something. Thus the bureaucracy should spend the voters’ money to dissuade them from voting that way. Hmm. No, not quite right, is it?

  1. A common argument used by anti-PR people is that it would allow extreme parties to get in . Never mind that that’s what people want.

  2. Or you could take the Ken Livingstone approach and over-ride democracy totally; consult with the residents of Kensington and Chelsea about extending the congestion charge zone, when they overwhelmingly reject it ask them again. When they reject it a second time, impose it anyway. And then propose putting the charge up to 5x the original level you promised not to increase and remove the residents’ discount on “unsuitable cars” hiding the politics of envy in a green wrappr. Effectively its a £7k a year wealth tax on residents of west london.

  3. We need a word for the kind of managed democracy the EU prefers. Since the attitudes of the EU elite strongly reflect French political traditions of arrogant, centralised state power, I suggest calling it “Énarchy”, from the word “énarque” which refers to the graduates of the École nationale d’administration who form much of the French ruling class. Forget Ode to Joy, try this:
    Énarchy in the UK
    =================
    I am an énarchist
    I am a dirigiste
Don’t know what I want but
I know you’ll pay for it
    I wanna be énarchy!
    No democracy
Énarchy for the UK its coming sometime and maybe
It’s never the wrong time for a tariff rise
Your future dream is emigration cos i
    I wanna be énarchy!
    So corruptly
How many ways to get what you want
I use taxes I use directives
I use treaties I use énarchy cos i
    I wanna be énarchy!
    The only way to be!
    Is this the USSR
    Or is this a Tsar
    Or is this a commissar
I thought it was the UK or just
    Another colony
    Another EU competency
    I wanna be an énarchist
    Oh what a name
    Get taxed to death!

As an aside, those described political developments are probably kind of encouraging to some.
